Installing a UPS for priority consumers of the house

Feb 25, 2022

This project was implemented in three stages. At the first stage, we conducted an inspection of the existing power supply system. At the second stage, we selected the right type of UPS with external batteries, taking into account the customer’s wishes. At the third stage, we implemented the project. Please see a step-by-step implementation of the project below.

The results of the inspection of the power supply system of the BC building

The existing power supply system of the house (Photo 1):

  1. The house is equipped with various automation systems and expensive electronics, which suffer various malfunctions due to poor-quality electrical energy
    • Automatic supply and exhaust system;
    • Smart Home;
    • Automatic sliding gates;
    • Theater equipment;
    • A gas boiler;
    • CCTV system;
    • Security and fire alarm system;
    • Internet access system.
  2. The customer complains about frequent outages.

Solution

The customer focused on the installation of a diesel power plant that would power the entire house during the loss of mains voltage. Let’s see the advantages and disadvantages of a diesel power plant (DPP).

DPP advantages:

  • Self-containment. DPP can power the entire house at any time of the day and time of the year;
  • Long run time. DPP can generate power almost constantly, if fueled, maintained properly, and limited to overhaul period.

DPP disadvantages:

  • It takes certain time to start DPP and reach the operating parameters, while the house is completely de-energized. It also has a negative impact on the automation systems and electronics of this house, which is what we address;
  • High noise level, the neighbors in the community will complain;
  • A special permit from the competent authorities is required for the emission of exhaust gases;
  • DPP requires periodic maintenance;
  • The need for constant refueling.

Let’s see the advantages and disadvantages of an on-line uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

UPS advantages:

  • Absolute and continuous protection of critical equipment from all supply-related issues;
  • Completely eliminates the impact of output voltage failures when switching the UPS to battery operation and back;
  • Compactness;
  • Affordable cost;
  • Service life;
  • Does not require periodic maintenance.

UPS disadvantages:

  • The run time is relatively short;
  • It is required to keep a temperature of 20 ... 25 ° C in the room with a UPS to ensure maximum service life.

Based on the above, we came to the conclusion that it was necessary to install a DDP and a UPS to ensure maximum reliability of the house power supply. But considering the cost of DPP with a UPS and taking into account all the advantages and disadvantages, this solution was rejected.

Having identified the customer’s needs and capacities, we proposed the optimal solution – install an on-line UPS with external rechargeable batteries with run life between 30 minutes and 2 hours, without DPP. We allocated priority consumers of the house to be supplied by UPS in order to optimize this solution as much as possible:

  • Automatic supply and exhaust system;
  • Smart Home;
  • Automatic sliding gates;
  • Theater equipment;
  • A gas boiler;
  • CCTV system;
  • Security and fire alarm system;
  • Internet access system;
  • A fridge;
  • A TV in the living room.

Project implementation

  • An additional distribution board was installed to integrate the UPS into the existing power supply system of the house and to allocate priority consumers;
  • UPS installed: Lanches L900Pro-H 3/3 30kVA 27kW with external batteries;
  • The distribution board room with the UPS installed was already equipped with air conditioning, there was no issue of maintaining the desired temperature.
